What Malaʻe Productions contributed
Malaʻe Productions provided Director of Photography services, cinematography, stock video and full equipment support for Sharkcano, a Discovery Channel production exploring sharks thriving near active underwater volcanoes.
Volcanic and marine subjects meet on the Big Island, and this credit grew out of the same work as our Wild Hawaii: Land of Fire and Sharks of the Fire Goddess credits. Underwater cinematography is shot on RED Digital Cinema cameras in Nauticam housings for RED DSMC2 and DSMC3, with ports, monitors and underwater lighting, supported by our channel-crossing fishing boats and Zodiac inflatable. Above the surface, the DJI Inspire fleet flies under FAA Part 107 and the Shotover F1 gimbals work from boat and vehicle.
Stock video came from our 4K and 8K Hawaii library, which holds volcanic sequences — Kīlauea eruptions, lava ocean entries, volcanic lightning — alongside shark and other marine subjects gathered over two decades.
Full equipment support means the RED fleet, housings, gimbals, drones, motion control, lighting and lenses came from one inventory on the island, with crews who already knew the coastline. The same package is available to documentary productions across Hawaii.
